How It Works
Consumers decide whether the experience is enjoyable
Good Taste Awards does not ask professionals to define deliciousness on behalf of everyone else. At every decision point, the panel contains a strict majority of consumer-side assessors who fit the product's predefined Target Population.

Professionals are present for relevant sensory competence and bounded confirmation. Their status does not give their Overall Liking response extra weight.
Every voting assessor occupies exactly one track for a particular product.
A consumer-side assessor has a realistic possibility of consuming the product, can understand the task, meets the applicable participation restrictions and demonstrates the integrity needed for blind independent assessment.
The track includes two descriptive subtypes:
The subtype does not create another vote or a higher rank.
A professional assessor has relevant verifiable experience and demonstrates diagnostic competence, blind discipline and the conduct required for bounded confirmation.
Relevant experience may come from food production, culinary practice, beverage work, buying, retail, hospitality, sensory work, food writing, category knowledge or another controlled professional scope. A title alone is not enough; the qualification must be relevant to the assignment.
Some people could qualify in more than one way. A buyer may also be a food enthusiast; a chef may also be an ordinary consumer of the category. For one product, that person is assigned to one composition track and contributes one Overall Liking response.
No professional multiplier, double identity or extra category vote exists. Every valid response enters the candidate calculation on equal weight.
| Decision stage | Valid responses | Consumer-side minimum | Professional minimum | Maximum professionals |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Initial | 8 | 5 | 2 | 3 |
| First progressed | 12 | 7 | 3 | 5 |
| Extended | 16 | 9 | 4 | 7 |
| Final | 24 | 13 | 6 | 11 |
The panel must satisfy both the total valid count and the composition limits. Replacing an invalid or unavailable response restores the count and the composition without telling the replacement assessor the earlier result.
There is no single panel suitable for every product. A highly bitter drink, a chilli condiment, a cultured dairy-style product and a low-alcohol beverage may require different consumption relevance and participation controls.
The Target Population defines:
Assignment is based on that definition, not on a desired score or entrant preference.
Consumer-side assessors learn how to use the response scale, remain independent, respect confidentiality and follow the blind task. They are not trained to reward a reference flavour or to imitate professional language.
Authentic liking is valuable only when it is recorded with procedural discipline. Orientation improves that discipline without turning potential consumers into a conformity panel.
Professional assessors also record their own equally weighted liking response. After the lock, relevant professionals can help make sensory observations precise and, where assigned, record an individual confirmation disposition.
They may confirm the calculated candidate, confirm a fully supported lower level for a defined evidence reason, identify invalidity or authorize procedural reassessment. They cannot promote the product above the candidate or rewrite the independent responses.
The Panel Lead facilitates evidence, protects minority observations, controls discussion conduct and escalates procedural concerns. The role does not create a composition track or an extra vote.
A Panel Lead who is also an assigned assessor must record and lock the independent response before facilitating. The same person cannot prepare or serve that product, control its blind identity, authorize its result or independently review the same evidence.
Assignment considers employment, consultancy, investment, product development, close relationships, active disputes, gifts, confidential prior access and recognizable participation. A relevant conflict can exclude or restrict assignment.
Assessors may also step aside when illness, medication, smell or taste disturbance, fatigue, alcohol exposure, attention or another temporary condition could affect valid participation. Self-exclusion is part of integrity, not a performance failure.
Good Taste Awards monitors participation, conduct, conflicts, confidentiality and proper scale use. It does not demand that assessors agree or remove a response merely because it differs from the group.
Repeated unexplained behaviour may require review, but authentic variation remains part of sensory evidence.
The panel is relevant to the Target Population and balanced by controlled composition. It is not designed to estimate the percentage of a market that would buy or prefer the product.
The correct public meaning is product-specific recognition through the Good Taste Awards method. Claims about population preference require a different study.
