Product Eligibility

The core eligibility test

A product can enter the ordinary Good Taste Awards pathway when all of the following are true:

  1. it is a food or drink intended for human consumption;
  2. one assessed-product identity can be defined;
  3. the intended Target Population can be defined and validly represented within the controlled small-panel method;
  4. the product can be presented under blind conditions without losing the experience being assessed;
  5. a representative preparation and serving state can be reproduced;
  6. sufficient sample can be supplied in an acceptable and controllable condition;
  7. the entrant can make the required declarations and accept the applicable controls.

Eligibility permits assessment. It does not predict or guarantee a star.

02

Food and drink for people

The ordinary award scope covers edible food and drink products intended for human consumption. Pet food, animal feed, non-edible products and products whose ordinary identity is a medicine or non-food dose form fall outside this pathway.

A product does not become eligible merely because it contains an edible ingredient or has a flavour. Its intended identity and ordinary use must be food or drink.

03

Supplements and dose forms

Tablets, capsules, measured supplement shots, vitamin gummies and similar forms marketed primarily as a supplement or dose do not enter simply because they can be tasted. A confectionery product containing an ordinary nutrient claim may still be a food where confectionery remains its real identity; classification follows the submitted product, not an attempt to avoid the boundary.

Health, nutrition and functional claims never add star potential.

04

Infant and young-child products

The Target Population must be capable of valid direct participation under the applicable ethical, legal and safeguarding requirements. A product intended principally for infants or very young children cannot be treated as though adult proxy liking were the child's response.

If the intended users cannot take part validly and a separately authorized design is not available, the ordinary award pathway is not suitable. Parent or caregiver opinion does not silently replace the defined consumer group.

05

One product, not an uncontrolled assortment

One entry needs one reproducible assessed-product identity. A gift box, mixed selection or rotating assortment is eligible as one product only where the stable blend itself is the marketed product, the intended component ratio is defined, and representative portions can be controlled.

Separate flavours, recipes or products are separate entries when each could produce a materially different sensory experience or result.

06

The product must reach the panel in a valid state

Fresh, chilled, frozen, carbonated, fermented and time-sensitive products can be eligible where transport, storage, preparation and service can preserve a representative state.

A product may be unable to enter when its condition changes unpredictably before assessment, when no valid service window can be defined, or when transport and preparation cannot be controlled. Sending extra quantity does not correct an invalid state.

07

Blind presentation must remain meaningful

An intrinsic shape, colour or aroma does not by itself make a product ineligible. Blind control concerns avoidable identity-bearing information such as brand, package, price and reputation.

Eligibility is affected where the product cannot be separated from a material identity cue or claim without changing the product, and that exposure prevents the controlled method from operating honestly.

08

A representative preparation must exist

Ready-to-eat products can be served directly where appropriate. Other forms may require cooking, brewing, dilution, thawing, tempering, heating or a neutral carrier.

The preparation must reveal the submitted product and be reproducible. An open-ended recipe, elaborate restaurant assembly, takeaway service dependent on venue performance, or promotional suggestion with many uncontrolled ingredients may not provide a stable assessment object.

09

Commercial availability and sample representation

The sample should represent the ordinary marketed product scope declared in the entry. A specially selected, reformulated, reworked or hand-finished sample is a different assessed-product object unless that condition is the normal product.

Sample equivalence matters if later supply is needed for progression. A materially changed formulation, process, format or instruction cannot be combined with earlier responses as though nothing changed.

11

Products requiring responsible participation controls

Alcoholic products and other forms with material participation restrictions can be eligible where the Target Population, portion, assignment and exposure controls are defined. A person is not assigned merely because the category is professionally relevant.

The method protects the validity and responsibility of participation without adding or subtracting taste credit for alcohol level.

12

When the answer is not obvious

A novel or hybrid product does not need a new award dimension. Classification identifies the closest ordinary consumption identity, method and preparation requirement. A Product-Specific Instruction may resolve a reproducible preparation detail.

If the uncertainty concerns whether a valid Target Population, blind presentation or stable experience exists, request classification support before paying or sending samples. A product is not made eligible by choosing Other as a category.
