How It Works
One primary question
Good Taste Awards begins with the assessor's integrated response to the product as presented:
How much do you enjoy the taste experience of this product as presented?
The controlled Overall Liking response captures the experience as a whole. It remains the sole primary input to the star candidate.
People do not normally experience aroma, flavour and texture as separate score boxes. Aroma can prepare the mouth for a flavour that never arrives. Texture can make a balanced recipe feel effortless or exhausting. A clean finish can make another sip attractive even when the opening is restrained.
Overall Liking allows these elements to work together in the way they do during actual tasting. It does not require an assessor to calculate a technical average before expressing enjoyment.
Assessors receive orientation in task understanding and use of the response scale. They learn to record their response independently and to distinguish the presented sample from brand or reputation.
They are not trained to award a conventional flavour profile. A potential consumer is not corrected for preferring a different level of sweetness, bitterness, acidity or texture where the response is relevant, genuine and properly recorded.
The assessor records the response before hearing another person's opinion. It is then locked.
The lock prevents later discussion, status or awareness of the candidate from rewriting the primary evidence. A correction may address a documented recording or system error through the controlled pathway; it is not an opportunity to reconsider preference after the group speaks.
A professional, potential consumer and food enthusiast use the same controlled response framework. Each eligible assessor contributes one response. The decision engine does not multiply a professional response, average a subgroup into a hidden weighting, or give the Panel Lead an additional vote.
The panel composition gives the consumer side a strict majority. Equality applies to responses within that composition.
After the response lock, assessors may describe the experience through lenses such as:
These observations make the final comment useful and support bounded professional confirmation. They do not become a second candidate score.
A chocolate guide may discuss snap and melt. A water guide may discuss mineral impression and refreshment. A stew guide may discuss component integration and repeated spoonfuls.
These lenses help assessors pay attention to what can matter in that experience. A product does not need to maximize every lens. A soft chocolate can be pleasurable without a sharp snap; a deliberately viscous drink should not be punished for lacking water-like lightness.
A product may be executed with recognizable skill and still fail to create enough pleasure for the panel. Another product may be simple but deeply enjoyable.
Good Taste Awards does not add points for process difficulty, ingredient cost, typicity, innovation or professional admiration. Where those facts are sensorially expressed, they influence the experience only through the response they create.
People can respond differently to the same controlled product. The method does not treat every difference as noise or demand one final group score.
The candidate uses the locked valid responses under predefined rules. Discussion may identify why responses varied, but it cannot eliminate a valid minority view merely to make the comment more polished.
A public star, product comment or publication index is a controlled representation. It is designed for communication and discovery. It does not replace the raw response records or become a new input to the decision.
Public feedback, ratings or social reactions may be displayed separately where authorized. They never enter the star calculation and cannot overturn it.
Overall Liking is simple to ask but not casual in use. Target-population relevance, blind presentation, independent locking, panel composition and predefined decision rules give the response its evidential context.
The method does not pretend that pleasure is objective. It makes the human judgment clear, bounded and traceable.
