The required amount belongs to the product, not a generic pack rule
Good Taste Awards calculates sample quantity from the usable sensory portions needed for the applicable pathway. The instruction also allows for preparation loss, control material, contingency, whole-unit yield and representative natural variation.
This is more accurate than asking every entrant to send a full retail pack for every possible assessor.
The controlled portion must give an assessor enough access to aroma, flavour, texture and finish without creating unnecessary satiety, intensity or waste.
One submitted unit may yield several valid portions where opening, preparation, holding and variation remain controlled. A small individual unit may need to be supplied whole. A naturally variable product may require several units even when its total weight appears sufficient.
The required usable quantity includes:
The usable total is divided by the verified yield of one submitted unit and rounded upward to a whole-unit count.
The ordinary blocks are:
| Supply block | New valid assessments | Cumulative responses after use |
|---|---|---|
| Initial | 8 | 8 |
| First progressed increment | 4 | 12 |
| Extended increment | 4 | 16 |
| Final increment | 8 | 24 |
An entrant may receive an instruction for a single maximum supply, an initial supply with a held reserve, or staged supply requested only when progression is authorized.
Portions already used in an earlier stage are not counted again in a later stage. Each separately dispatched supply still needs its own allowance for loss, control, contingency, yield and equivalence.
If the accepted amount is insufficient, the entry may be held, replaced, partially accepted or refused under the controlled pathway. Good Taste Awards does not simply decide that the product can win no more than One Star because the entrant sent too little.
Progression begins only when the required equivalent supply is available and accepted.
One oyster, truffle, pastry, piece of fruit, handmade confection or natural cut may not represent the submitted product. Multiple units may be required to balance size, composition, maturity, coating, filling or other material variation.
The representative-unit minimum applies even where the weight formula alone would produce fewer items.
The full maximum-pathway quantity arrives as one controlled lot. Unused advancement supply remains sealed or segregated until progression is authorized.
Initial and advancement blocks arrive together but are identified and controlled separately. Reserve condition and identity must remain equivalent.
The initial block arrives first. A later block is sent only after authorization and must match the accepted product version, formulation, process, format, instruction and material batch characteristics closely enough for evidence to be combined.
An entrant cannot select a later “better” batch after learning assessment information.
The product-specific instruction accounts for these differences.
The authorized shipment instruction states the required usable quantity, whole-unit count, unit size, representative-unit minimum and supply configuration. If the retail unit differs from the entered information, ask for correction before dispatch.
Do not replace the requested quantity with a larger catering pack where opening or product distribution would change the ordinary marketed experience. Do not send additional promotional units unless requested.
Replacement covers an identified shortage, rejected unit or failed block. The original discrepancy and replacement remain linked. The replacement must represent the accepted product and cannot be chosen using result information.
Only the authorized purpose permits release of a reserve or replacement.
Category pages explain the likely product pathway. The entry-specific shipment instruction provides the quantity that governs the accepted entry.
